    D.G.'s Monday Minute Message

Subject: Rotary Monday Minute (SAT) Membership, Grants, Conference info and Happy Valentine's Day

Dear Club Presidents and Assistant Governors:

    A Membership Moment:
We have talked about your ability to work with your Club members in need of financial assistance to remain active in Rotary. One of you reported the following and I think it provides valuable insight for everyone. "Although we had spoken in a meeting about the fact there were other options for those struggling right now, it seemed resignation was easier than asking for help."  However, when the President made a personal phone call and asked directly, "If you didn't have to pay dues/fines/contributions/meals (whatever your program of assistance is), would you remain an active Rotarian?" The response was YES in each case! "These Rotarians wanted to continue making their substantial contributions of time and talent; they just needed to be asked directly and confidentially." Good food for thought. Also, some Membership ideas from D5220 attached.

    Grants:
All District Simplified Grant dollars are expended! I am so pleased our $30,000 are out in your communities...and I am sorry not everyone could be funded this year.

    From The Rotary Foundation:
Due to the global economic downturn and volatile investment climate, and significant unrealized losses, Trustees have reduced the Humanitarian Grants budget by US $16.3 million for the 2008-09 Rotary year Matching Grants and Volunteer Service Grants will be most immediately impacted by this decision.  The Foundation will continue to approve complete Matching Grant applications that meet all requirements on a first-come first-serve basis until the remaining budget has been committed. The budget for Volunteer Service Grants has been fully committed for the 2008-09 Rotary year, and no further applications will be accepted and pending applications will be returned to their sponsors.

    Conference Info:

    * Registration is live!
http://www.rotarydistrict5190.org It is online only BUT we have telephone help available. 530-265-6470 (my office). Early registrants go into a drawing for fun gift certificates from the Peppermill...and get some special beads to wear and share.

    * Conference will be a fun mini-vacation with great content and fellowship! And it will be even more fun if we are all there! There is a little R & R time built in, along with a couple of great gathering spots for visiting with friends, new and old. Great parties, interactive sessions, inspiring stories and speakers, fun entertainment. And, there are several activities just for you!

    * I will send a very short Conference Minute to you every week or so. Please put it in your bulletins or announce it (if not you, maybe you can assign someone as your Conference Cheerleader?)

    * Club Displays: In the House of Friendship, a sign-up sheet will be coming, no cost but you do need to reserve a space and identify any electrical needs.  House of Friendship will house not only Club displays but a special End Polio Now display along with Rotary vendors, the Photography exhibit, Baskets for Raffle from each Area, and the Registration Desk. The room will be open into the grand ballroom during fellowship and reception times before plenary sessions.

    * Photography Contest info is attached. Please share this with your members. I know we have some fabulous photographers within our District. Sign up sheet on our District Website.
    http://www.rotarydistrict5190.org/districtconferencehome.asp

    * For The End Polio Now display, I would like you to contribute what you are doing to raise Polio Eradication dollars. For example, a flier announcing a special event, a sample of your collection jugs or cans, etc. It will give Clubs good ideas as we continue to raise funds and Keep Our Promise to the Children of the World. Contact Sue Welsch
    suewelsch@yahoo.com
to let her know you will provide something.

    * Projects in each Avenue will be featured. Please let me know if you would like to present one of your projects. Several of you have already volunteered, thank you! I wish we could feature every single one, but of course that won't be possible, so please let me know ASAP if you are interested.

    * Sponsors still needed! Great exposure and fun carnivale gift packs, including commemorative bead & beverage doubloons (see levels for benefits). Individuals may also provide sponsorships; $50 and up includes commemorative bead and that can be added at registration.

    * Don't forget Golf on Thursday May 14th at the spectacular Lake Ridge Golf Course, just minutes from the Peppermill.

Last, but not least: Happy Valentine's Day !

    Wyn

    Jan. 31

    Dear Club Presidents:

Please check with your President Elect and be sure he or she received the PETS
invitation. We recently discovered several Presidents-Elect who had not...which
means we have an incorrect email or the invitation got caught in the spam
filter. Please inquire and if your PE has not received an invitation, please
have him or her contact DGE Janice Gage ASAP. Thank you!

Many of the officers for next year are NOT listed on the RI Incoming Officer
list on the RI website. Please ask your Secretary to add the names and
information for your incoming President and Secretary.

I am attaching the Official beginning Membership numbers for each Club. This is
the number to use when calculating net gain. Also on the topic, Membership
Seminar documents are posted on the District website, link below.

    http://www.rotarydistrict5190.org/membership.asp

Your fellow President Ben Langlotz also serves as our District's Paul Harris
Society Chair. He mentioned the value he received as a President attending
District leadership meetings. To this end, I would like to invite each of you
to attend the next quarterly District Leadership meeting, Saturday January 31st,
in Reno (tentatively the Grand Sierra Hotel). The meeting usually runs 9:00 to
noon, coffee and muffins at 8:30 and this time we will have a fellowship
reception the previous Friday evening, January 30. Although this meeting is in
no way required attendance, I think you will enjoy it and benefit from the
topics discussed...and the Leadership Team will be very appreciative of your
    input.

    Thank you!

    Yours in Rotary,

    Wyn

  • P.S. Please don't forget that YOUR Conference Celebration is May 14-17th. :)

    Dear Club Presidents:

I am so enjoying the various Foundation dinners!  If your Area or Club has not yet scheduled one, please do.  It can be casual or more formal; it can be dinner or just held at a Club or Multi-Club meeting where partners are invited.  Rotarians should be enormously proud of OUR Foundation and this is a way to celebrate and honor its work and the many who support it.

Several of you have asked about where to send your Polio Plus contributions. Use the regular Contribution form (attached) and check Polio Plus.  I also attached the new Recognition transfer form.

Please put in your Club bulletin and Announce: This year we are developing a cadre of trained District Rotarians to serve as trainers.  These trainers will be the presenters at Assembly, Foundation, Membership and Youth Seminars and other training events.  The invitation is open to every interested Rotarian BUT every potential trainer MUST attend the Train the Trainer session on Saturday, February 21 at the Grand Sierra in Reno.  Please contact PDG Bob Dorr <red@directcon.net> or PDG Steve Snyder <sas@goldrushchevy.com> to sign-up.

Have you downloaded and read through the Call to Recognition, the District Awards Program?  Now is the time!  There is a wealth of possible awards and I encourage you to apply.  Why?

    • The Awards Program is designed to help encourage the kinds of activities that are characteristic of strong, vibrant Clubs, so participation in the program has the benefit of helping ensure a full, well-balanced menu of service (and fellowship).
    • One of the ways to honor the dedication and service of your Club members this year is to give your Club the opportunity to receive recognition at our District Conference in May.  It is especially nice to receive such recognition at a large gathering of our District membership.
    • Recognition helps underscore the importance and value of the work your Club is doing.
    • It is a wonderful vehicle for the sharing of great ideas with others in our District.
    • Recognition builds Pride in Rotary and Pride in your Club.

December is Family of Rotary month, a great time to include family members, Foundation Alumni (Group Study Exchange members, Ambassadorial scholars, Peace fellows), Rotaract members, Interact, RYLA and RYE students in one of your meetings or special holiday activities.

Thank you once more for your dedication and leadership this year!  I am honored to serve with you.

    Yours in Rotary,
    Wyn
