The Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe invites community members to purchase tickets to attend a dinner at Harvey’s Convention Center, Emerald Bay Rooms 1,2, and 3 at 6pm on Tuesday, August 12, 2008.   The guest speaker will be Brittney Cummings, 2008 South Tahoe High School graduate. Brittney will tell and provide photos of her November 2007 National Immunization Day trip to Nigeria. This presentation has consistently drawn standing ovations from audiences. It  was also Brittney’s Senior Project presentation, and part of her graduation in 2008 from South Tahoe High School.

One purpose of the dinner is to make the South Lake Tahoe community aware of Rotary International’s (RI) work and leadership in the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. For over 20 years, the South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club has joined RI in this effort.
 - In 1985, RI initiated a partnership with the 166 nations of the World Health Assembly with a resolution to eradicate polio. At that time poliovirus was circulating in 125 countries, paralyzing or killing 350,000 persons per year.
In 2006, only 4 countries had new polio cases, and less than 1,000 new cases were reported worldwide.
 - The National Immunization Day strategy has been the primary worldwide method for achieving this success.

The work of eradicating polio is not yet done. Rotary International has received a $100 million matching grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for that purpose, and has asked each of its clubs, numbering 32,800 worldwide, to contribute $3,000 over the next three years. RI has asked clubs to raise their share of funds by polio-specific community-level fundraising efforts, and that is the second purpose of the dinner and presentation. All net proceeds from this event will be contributed to Rotary International’s Gates Foundation Match.
