ROTARIANS AT WORK DAY 2009

On Saturday, April 25, 2009, members of the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe and the Lake Tahoe Community College Rotaract Club provided defensible space work to seniors and disabled members of the South Lake Tahoe Community.  In all, 23 senior citizen properties were treated for wild fire fuel reduction and defensible space and an additional 7 lots owned by the California Tahoe Conservancy were treated to reduce hazards to adjacent properties.

From the treatment efforts, 24 truckloads of tree branches, pine needles, pine cones and other debris were removed and dumped at the South Tahoe Refuse Facility in South Lake Tahoe.  Rotarians participating in the day’s events included John Upton, Buck Barkley, Ray Zachau, John Greenhut, Betty Gorman and her husband Jim, Mark Lucksinger, Arnie Fontaine, Bob Huckaby, and Club President Lorenzo Gigliotti.  Rotaract Club Members Jesus Zamora-Pineda, David Rodriguez, Edwin Gonzalez and Leisa Rodriguez rounded off the team, providing a tremendous effort.

We also would like to recognize Shawn Butler of the California Tahoe Conservancy for his assistance with the needed due diligence in preparing for this event and special thanks to Robert Cummings of the California Tahoe Conservancy, not only for monitoring our stewardship of Conservancy parcels, but for his assistance with much of the treatment labor as well.

Special thanks to Jim Lira and Lira’s Market for supporting the event with lunches for the workers and to South Tahoe Refuse Company for providing dump passes and support for the disposal of the materials cleaned from these properties.
