Group Study Exchange from Thailand

The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries.

For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

SLT Rotary Awards 2006 Barn Dance Proceeds

At the meeting of November 1st, the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe distributed $10,600, representing the net proceeds of the 4th Annual Rotary Barn Dance. The event was held on September 9th and hosted by Al and Patty Moss at their ranch in Woodfords. Over 400 guests attended and enjoyed a BBQ dinner plus after dinner dancing to the Riptides.

This year the Lake Tahoe Community College Winter Clothing Give Away, Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, and Woodfords Volunteer Fire Department equally shared the $10,600 proceeds. Long time Rotarian, Al Moss, presented the checks to representatives of each organization. Checks were received by Terry Daniels and Karen Houser representing the Boys and Girls Club, Melonie Guttry representing the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, and Buck McClelland of the Woodfords Volunteer Fire Department.

2006 Rotary Car Sweepstakes Winner

The South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club celebrated the final chapter in its Great Car Sweepstakes on May 3 at Harrahs. This year, it was lucky key number 16 that opened the grand prize, a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 25 finalists chose their keys at random and, one by one, tried their luck at opening the Jeep. The winning key belonged to finalist Dr. David Borges who yielded the attempt to wife Dr. Karen Borges, and she selected the lucky key. Karen then drew from among the remaining 24 and Jim & Heather Rix , finalists #14, won the trip to Maui! Shehadi Motors will provide a car detailing to the other 23 finalists. Congratulations to Dr. David Borges and his wife, Dr. Karen Borges and to Jim and Heather Rix! Our thanks to the event committee, club members, Mark Shehadi and Shehadi Motors and to the community for supporting this effort, making it possible for our Club to support a broad range of activities in the community! The Rotary Club sold a record 1,357 tickets, raising over $35,000 for the Club’s 2006/2007 project and scholarship budget. Thanks again to everyone that made this possible.

Rotary Builds Bus Shelters

The two Rotary Clubs on the south end of Lake Tahoe joined forces in recent weeks to construct two much needed bus shelters, one in front of Lakeland Village, and one serving the Senior Plaza near Barton Hospital. The Rotary clubs recognized a need for the shelters, especially during the winter months when the cold and blowing snow can make waiting for public transportation an uncomfortable ordeal.

Both Rotary Clubs joined forces for the project in celebration of the 100 year anniversary of Rotary, an international service organization of 1.2 million men and women in 31,200 clubs throughout 166 countries. Each year the South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club, chartered in 1946, and the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club, chartered in 1962 are involved in many local and worldwide community service projects including local scholarships to South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County schools.
